Started Tailwagger's because after 20 years in the corporate world,
he enjoyed being around animals much more.
In 2000, I began volunteering for animal rescue groups in Colorado. Every other
week or so, a stray or lost dog would find me, so I did what I could to help
out. I adopted Hobo, a Miniature Pinscher who was headed to the pound for his
last ride. I went to work for a local pet center, learned dog obedience
training, and how to care for dogs, cats, rabbits and rodents. A year later I
adopted Agi (Vagabond) a Pinscher mix, so Hobo could have a buddy.
The strays kept showing up, and people started calling me “The Dog Rescuer.” I’d
do whatever it took to return the lost animals to their owners. Easy ones had ID
tags, so I’d just call and return ‘em. The untagged or unchipped ones were more
of a challenge. I’d make “FOUND” reports with local Animal Control offices,
place ads in the local newspapers, post fliers around town, and go dog walking
to look for lost owners. Sometimes I’d foster the animals, and
work with Rescue/Adoption Organizations, to find them new homes.
After 6 years, I was able to help rescue and return over 100 dogs, 4 cats, and a
ferret named Bob.
I fostered 3 dogs, placed 2 of them into new homes, and kept one. His name is
Drifter. He’s an Aussie Shepherd/Collie/Husky/Mutt mix.
